The Rare Roots Records – a drawn history of black music
4th of July – 29th of August
opening: July 4th, 14:00 – 18:00
@ Tune Up
Melkmarkt 17
Antwerp

Andreas Peeters was born in Leuven, and left the university town at the age of eighteen. He studied Illustrative Design at Sint Lucas Antwerp, and spent one year at the Animation department of the Royal Arts College in Ghent. He currently lives and works in Antwerp, and combines teaching with his atelier work and an academic philosophy course. His work is a combination of drawings, paintings, photography and video. Music manifests itself as the main inspiration of his work.
At this very moment he is working on the musical documentary Reason, which portrays the underground of the Belgian reggae-scene.

At Tune Up Andreas will present his project “The Rare Roots Records – a drawn history of black music”

“These series are a tribute.

They bundle up six years of inspiration which comes from a journey through black music – from the first time I left London with bags full of vinyl, until the day I had the privilege to talk to some of these musicians in person. Some of these drawings are inspired by record covers or found photography, some by pictures I took on concerts, some came right out of my head. I want to express my gratitude to those musicians, for they have kept me drawing and offered me a project. Their message has intentionately been neglected for years by radiostations and TV, for it tells the half that has never been told.
A few of these images might appear to you as iconic, as they are rooted in the dark origins of Rastafarianism. I do not share this belief and I hope these images reach an unprejudiced eye. They represent a heritage too valuable to sacrifice to a mentality that is omnipresent today : the idea that whatever becomes popular, should claim all attention from the people. What is presented to us today as eclectic, results from an unrespectful attitude towards the roots of this music. I hope these pictures might encourage you to dig and find these roots, that they will make you take your time to truly listen.”

30/05: Strumpets live – 15h

Strumpets is a rock band from Antwerp, Belgium formed in November of 2007 leaded by the Argentinian Miguel Horacio Sosa. Strumpets started originally as a solo studio project that later evolved into a band with Elko Blijweert, Jeroen Stevens, Jan Stoop and Farid Zahoun. ‘Hello Strumpets’ was recorded by Greg Brems in Begonia Studios (Antwerp). The album was co-produced by the band, the mix and mastering was done in Buenos Aires (Argentina) by Nicolas ” Parker ” Pucci. Special guest appearances included Mauro Pawlowksi from dEUS (who sang some lead vocals) and Pascal Deweze of Sukilove.

For live appearances the band feature alongside Miguel, Alexander van Herk, Rob Eelen and Thomas Noppe.

The music styles fluctuate between psychedelic pop, dream pop, baroque pop, art rock, electric cabaret, surf rock and romantic rock.

The lyrics contain a large sum of automatic poetry, strongly influenced by the early dada movement and the surrealist. Real experiences and anecdotes mingle with metaphors, leaving a free interpretation to the listener.

Kika D. is an established photographer, author and producer of short movies. Her effervescent, exhilarating and passionate personality lies at the foundation of all her work. Each and every piece of artwork she creates, revolves around images and music, usually with a heavy dose of emotions and all of it wrapped into some form of storytelling.

Born in Belgium, Kika D. has travelled all over the world, but lost her heart to Ibiza, where she resides if not in her home country.

Her inspiration and the concepts she creates come from a vast number of thoughts, events or circumstances that she finds herself in or is attracted to, each sparking contemporary ideas which she then brings to life in numerous ways, whether it be through books, photographs, music videoclips or movies.

On May 2nd Kika reveals her latest project named “Please don’t send me back to the Wolves”. A serie of photographs expressing the feeling of broken relationships and lost love.
The wolf symbolises the attractive man that you wan’t to love forever, but you know will break your heart one day. It’s the fairy tale wolf in sheep clothes, the wolf as a wild animal, …

After the movies, the clips and the books, Kika returns to the essence by expressing her emotion through black & white photography.

Last Sunday, Tune Up welcomed the 1st grade bachelors ‘graphic design’ of Sint-Lucas Antwerp. The students presented their sleeve cover designs made for Ian Dury’s single: Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll.

A good 80 people faced the stormy weather to have a look at the 160 cover artworks and to enjoy the opeing speech of performance poet Andy Fierens.

Thanks again to Ronald, Andy and all students!

The expo runs till April 30th.

On Sunday February 28th, Tune Up Artwall welcomes the 1st grade bachelors ‘graphic design’ of Sint-Lucas Antwerp.

Ian Dury’s “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll” was released in August 1977 by Stiff Records on 45T single with b-side “Razzle In My Pocket”.

As year-starting assignment each 1st grade bachelor designed a new sleeve cover for this Ian Dury single. Unique about this exposition is the fact that no selection has been made, it’s no best off. The full class result will be shown.
It’s a fantastic occasion for outsiders and future students to witness what is expected from starting graphic designers; and to see a legendary single sleeve being interpreted by about 50  young creative minds.

We would like to thank Ronald and Sint-Lucas for this opportunity and we’re more than excited to host this young bunch of creative power!

The expo will open on Sunday February 28th and will be introduced by performance poet Andy Fierens. The expo runs till Friday April 30th.
