Gangstarr has many classics but their two best records are Step In The Arena which I will post some other time and Daily Operation. I prefer Daily Operation cause it was a connection between the old and the new. Premier really matured on this record production wise with seemingly simple beats but when you hear the record a couple of time you realize how good and complex it is. Jeru’s and Lil Dap’s debut appearances were on this record, a lot of great hooks and a warm up to one of Premiers’s best production work that he would release after this record: Jeru’s The sun rises in the east.

Guru’s flow was at its peak “all you phony ass rappers amma BYS”. He rhymed so easy and straight that he made it sound easy as if he could flow over anything. I believed this record cleared the path for him to conceptualize his Jazzmatazz project. When you release a third record that is as good as this one and better than the previous two, that is when you know you made it to the hall of the great ones. I was supposed to go to a concert of theirs when they toured after the release of this record, unfortunately I did not make it, my brother did. It is one of the concerts I regret missing the most, I never got to see them live. Take a look at the cover picture of the record… I love the pose and setup, a little bit too hip-hopisch with the money and the attitude, but just enough not to be over the edge and still make a clear point.

Ever experienced the postSaturdayIkeaNoUptownEtrainsFultonStreet trauma? Well it happended to me last week. Took my lady to Redhook IKEA on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Fighting our way through the crowd, I felt it creeping into my system. Picked up some small items and stuffed it all into two overloaded IKEA bags, hoping the whole thing was over. And indeeed, the boat ride gave some releave, but it was not the end. We had to jump on a train uptown. As always, MTA scheduled some maintenance work and we ended up hopping from one platform to the other, toting those IKEA bags. Cold sweat, the thick air of the subway, a bum, and still no train! A long story short, got home sick, thinking, never again!!

Once at home, looking for a cure, I searched through a box of records that Michel left behind last time he was here in NY. The cover of one album catched my attention Herbie Mann’s, “Brazil: Once Again” (1978, on Atlantic) . It turned out to be the perfect shake of:

  • exotic tunes
  • upbeat ritme
  • Brazil grooves
  • and a fabulous cover

And if you ask me, the best cocktail to cure a post IKEA trauma. Try it!

Walk on by

I am very proud to say that the Vintagecrew saw Mr. Hayes live only a few months ago. He played live at BB King’s on time square (NYC) and we were there! He only played 6 (looong) songs the way only he can. Even though it was clear he was not a 100% health wise, he still turned the place inside out, seriously, my eyes were teary. What can I say, we got to see and hear the Man play “walk on by” live … tell me ur not jaleous.

The Cannonball

The Cannonball Adderley Quintet released several live recordings in the early seventies, several were released on the Fantasy Label. That pure electrical piano sound with a wawa, those piano solo’s, the funky drums, and off course the horns… love it. The picture I posted is the back side of the record sleeve, not intentional, but just as well. I like it more than the front.

Welcome to the vintage crew’s virtual hang out. Probably the second best spot in the world to kill some time. Apart from the counter of your local record store.

Well guess what. The concept is kind of the same. Drop off some old records, search for that funky break, tell some drunk men stories of last nights gig, pick up a flyer, dig thourgh some crates of records, share the latest on your favorite band. Just, here, we keep the counter always open.

In the meanwhile the crew is out there, on the road looking for quality vinyl, unique breaks, hottest swing, rockabilly, jazz and lindy hop parties, bars to hop, toppers to pin-up and a turntable to pirate.

Hang around and you will be the first one to know.
