In 1974, the most celebrated American R&B acts of the time came together with the most renowned musical groups in Africa for a 12-hour, three night long concert held in Kinshasa, Zaire. The event was combined with “The Rumble in the Jungle”, the epic fight between Mohammad Ali and George Foreman.

Soul Power is a documentary about this legendary music festival and it depicts the experiences and performances of such musical luminaries as James Brown, BB King, Bill Withers, Celia Cruz among a host of others.
At the peak of their talents and the height of their careers, these artists were inspired by this return to their African roots, as well as the enthusiasm of the Zairian audience, to give the performance of their lives. The concert has achieved mythological significance as the definitive African-American musical event of the 20th century.

I had almost missed out on it but today one of the greats turns 50: Kind of Blue, Miles’s epic Jazz record from 1959 has made it to the age of half a century but is still as contemporary as ever before. I have one copy myself, in fact, probably even two (on vinyl off course) of the probably best selling Jazz record in history and off course also an MP3 for the mp3 player. Initially I considered this record as “cool jazz”/”hard bop” extension of Miles’ Birth of Cool era that started around 1950. But it is more than that, it is more free, more alive, a joy to hear when you come home from a bad day at work or when your woman is giving you a hard time. Enjoy.

The Crew has been talking and informing a lot about the music and the vinyl. So time to put a bit more depth in the vintage part of Vintagecrew.

And why not start with that other part we love (almost) as much as the music: good old denim. A new movie on the history of denim and vintage denim culture is about to be released.
BLUE GOLD: American Jeans.

Release date is not yet defined, but we’ll do our best to get some copies available at Tune Up.
